An unseasonable cold front surged over southeast Australia during the weekend, bringing not only plummeting daytime temperatures and more alpine snow than many fronts last winter but also a very cold night.
There were hard frosts in the alps this morning (and around 10cm of accumulated snow) with recorded minima of -5.9°C at Mt Hotham, -5.6°C at Falls Creek and -5.1°C at Perisher Valley.
In Sydney, temperatures dropped to 9.7°C, the coldest November night in 20 years. Single digit minima were recorded across much of the southeast mainland and Tasmania, and other centres that recorded their coldest November night in nearly a decade or more were:
Ouse (-0.9°C), coldest since November, 2008.
Goulburn Ap (-1.0°C), coldest since November, 2014
Casterton (0.5°C), coldest since November, 2017
Coonawarra (0.4°C), coldest since November, 2017
Although warm northerly winds are starting to take over in SA, another cold night is expected for much of the southeast into Monday morning. Single digit temperatures are again likely throughout Victoria and southeast NSW, extending into far southeast SA as cold air lingers, winds ease and a high drifts overhead. Frosts are possible over central inland Victoria and around the South West Slopes and Central Tablelands of NSW, covering an area of farmland from Orange and Lithgow in NSW to the Victorian alpine valleys and west to the Grampians.
Sheep Graziers Alerts are also current.
