It's a long weekend this weekend in Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and the ACT, while it's just a regular two-day weekend in Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
The long weekend is for Labour Day in NSW, SA and the ACT. In Queensland, it's for the King's Birthday (Queensland moved the Sovereign's Birthday public holiday from May to October in 2016 because the state has numerous public holidays at the front end of the year).
Whether you're enjoying three days off work or two days off, or even if you're stuck working right through, here's a quick whip-around of the weather in the capital cities.
Perth
Perth's average October maximum is 23.4°C and Saturday should peak around that mark with a forecast maximum of 24°C. Sunday will be a little cooler with a high around 21°C as southwesterly winds push into the city as a cold front passes over waters south of WA.
Little or no rain is expected from this system, even on the far southwest tip of the state.
Adelaide
After showers on both Thursday and Friday to kick off the month, the first weekend of October promises mostly sunny skies in Adelaide, with sunshine persisting into the holiday Monday.
Maximum temperatures around 19°C, 20°C and 20°C can be expected across the three days, which would be slightly cooler than the average October maximum of 21.4°C.
Darwin
The Top End wet season doesn't officially start until November 1, and Darwin will be dry over the weekend, with maximums around 34°C on Saturday and 33°C on Sunday. There's a slight possibility of a late shower on Sunday evening.
Melbourne
After heavy rain beginning on Thursday afternoon that continued into Friday, Melbourne will gradually start to clear over the weekend. Showers and a thunderstorm are still a possibility on Saturday with just the slight chance of a clearing shower on Sunday.
Maximums will be around 19°C on Saturday and a relatively cool 16°C on Sunday. Melbourne's average October maximum is 19.7°C.
Sydney
Sydney will have some of the most dynamic weather anywhere in the country on Saturday, with showers and a possible late storm on the meteorological menu.
There's the chance of a few lingering showers on Sunday morning and early afternoon, but the good news for rugby league fans is that conditions look like clearing by the 7:30 pm NRL Grand Final kickoff at 7:30 pm on Sunday.
Expect maximums of 23°C, 24°C and 24°C across the long weekend.
Canberra
After a wet Friday in the national capital, a shower or two could stick around for both Saturday and Sunday with the chance of a thunderstorm on Saturday. Conditions will start to clear on the holiday Monday after a possible foggy start.
Expect coolish maximums around 19°C, 20°C and 21°C across the three days. Canberra's average October maximum is 21.1°C.
Hobart
The average October maximum in the Tasmanian capital is 17.1°C, so the forecast maximums of 17°C for Saturday and 16°C for Sunday should be pretty close to what you'd expect at this time of year. Saturday looks dry, with a possible late shower on Sunday.
Brisbane
The dynamic weather of recent days which has impacted much of NSW, Vic, SA and the ACT will largely bypass southeast Queensland, with Brisbane expecting maximums of 26°C and 27°C on the weekend under mostly sunny skies.
The Qld capital has received just 1.4 mm of rain since the start of September, and while there are signs of a decent drop by the middle of next week, the weekend will stay mostly dry.
We hope you enjoy the long weekend (or regular weekend) wherever you're spending it.
