Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds for Hunter and parts of Mid North Coast, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and North West Slopes and Plains Forecast Districts. Issued at 6:18 pm Saturday, 5 September 2026. Damaging winds continuing over parts of NSW and southern ACT. Weather Situation A strong northwesterly flow continues over parts of the state during the afternoon and into the evening. Winds will tend westerly during this evening. DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas: Mid North Coast, Hunter, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory For parts of the SNOWY MOUNTAINS and southern parts of the ACT: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are forecast to continue. For alpine areas above 1900 metres DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h are possible. For the SOUTH COAST and northern parts of the COASTAL RANGES: Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS around 90 km/h are possible. For parts of the CENTRAL TABLELANDS, HUNTER AND PARTS OF THE MID NORTH COAST: DAMAGING WIND GUSTS around 90 km/h are possible with isolated showers and thunderstorms diminishing later this evening. BLIZZARD conditions are possible over alpine areas above 1900 metres during this evening and into the night. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve. Winds are expected to ease across much of the warning area during late this evening, though damaging winds may redevelop overnight in parts of the Snowy Mountains and South Coast Ranges and continue into Sunday morning. Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Gosford, Scone, Mudgee, Cessnock and Maitland. Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Metropolitan and Illawarra districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
