Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Minor Flood Warning For The Diamantina River Issued at 01:40 PM AEST on Sunday 08 March 2026 Flood Warning Number: 64 MINOR FLOODING CONTINUING AT BIRDSVILLE Recent rainfall across the Diamantina catchment has resulted in significant river level rises. Elevated river levels are occurring downstream of Diamantina Lakes on the Diamantina River. Along the Diamantina River at Birdsville the river has fallen below the moderate flood level. Another flood peak is currently upstream near Monkira, and may cause renewed rises at Birdsville over the coming week. Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes: The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is currently at 5.32 m and falling, above the moderate flood level (4.00 m) and well above the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway level (2.10 m). Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes: Moderate flooding is occurring at Roseberth. Minor flooding is occurring at Monkira and Birdsville. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station was 5.90 m and falling at 9:00 am Sunday, with minor flooding. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station is expected to remain above the minor flood level (4.00 m) during the next few days. Renewed rises are possible as upstream flows arrive. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs.
