Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Moderate Flood Warning For The Western River And Minor Flood Warning For The Diamantina River Issued at 01:48 PM AEST on Thursday 12 March 2026 Flood Warning Number: 68 MODERATE FLOODING OCCURRING AT WINTON MINOR FLOODING CONTINUING AT BIRDSVILLE Moderate to heavy rainfall was observed across parts of the Western River catchment over the weekend, resulting in river and creek level rises. It is estimated that a near major peak occurred at Winton Wednesday evening, with river levels now above the moderate flood level and easing. Further downstream, moderate flooding is falling slowly along the Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes. A flood peak is currently approaching Monkira where moderate flooding is occurring. As these flows move downstream renewed river level rises are possible at Birdsville over the coming weeks, where minor flooding is occurring. Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes: The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is currently at 5.01 m and falling, above the moderate flood level (4.00 m) and well above the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway level (2.10 m). Western River: Moderate flooding is occurring along the Western River at Winton. The Western River at Winton is estimated to have peaked near the major flood level (3.50 m) Wednesday evening. The river level is currently at 2.65 m and falling with moderate flooding. The Western River at Winton may remain above the moderate flood level (2.00 m) for the remainder of Thursday and into Friday. Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes: Moderate flooding is occurring at Monkira. Minor flooding is occurring at Roseberth and Birdsville. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station was at 4.95 m and falling at 9:00 am Thursday, with minor flooding. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station is expected to remain above the minor flood level (4.00 m) during the next few days. Renewed rises are possible over the coming weeks as upstream flows arrive. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads. Check the ABC and local media for updates.
