Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Minor Flood Warning For The Diamantina River Issued at 01:57 PM AEST on Wednesday 18 March 2026 Flood Warning Number: 72 LOCALISED FLOODING POSSIBLE DOWNSTREAM OF DIAMANTINA LAKES WITH FORECAST RAINFALL MINOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT BIRDSVILLE Recent localised heavy falls over the southern parts of the Diamantina River catchment have resulted in significant renewed river level rises at Roseberth, where moderate flooding is occurring. Further rainfall is forecast for the remainder of Wednesday which may result in further river level rises and localised flooding downstream of Diamantina Lakes. A moderate flood peak has passed through Monkira and is now approaching Roseberth. As these flows move downstream combined with renewed rises at Roseberth, further river level rises are likely at Birdsville over the next few days, where minor flooding is occurring. Moderate flooding is slowly easing along the Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes. A Severe Weather Warning is current for heavy rainfall for parts of the Channel Country. Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes: The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is currently at 4.58 m and slowly falling, above the moderate flood level (4.00 m) and well above the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway level (2.10 m). Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes: Renewed river level rises and localised flooding is possible downstream of Diamantina Lakes with forecast rainfall. Moderate flooding is occurring at Roseberth. Minor flooding is occurring at Monkira and Birdsville. At 9:00 am Wednesday the Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station was at 4.35 m and steady, with minor flooding. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station is expected to remain above the minor flood level (4.00 m) for the next few days. Renewed rises are likely as upstream flows arrive, combined with forecast rainfall. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads. Check the ABC and local media for updates.
