Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Minor Flood Warning For The Diamantina River Issued at 03:14 PM AEST on Tuesday 17 March 2026 Flood Warning Number: 71 LOCALISED FLOODING POSSIBLE DOWNSTREAM OF DIAMANTINA LAKES WITH FORECAST RAINFALL MINOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT BIRDSVILLE Localised heavy falls are forecast over the southern parts of the Diamantina River catchment, which may result in renewed river level rises and localised flooding downstream of Diamantina Lakes from Tuesday evening. A moderate flood peak has passed through Monkira and is now approaching Roseberth, where minor flooding is occurring. As these flows continue downstream renewed river level rises are likely at Birdsville over the coming days, where minor flooding is occurring. Moderate flooding is slowly easing along the Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes. Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes: The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is currently at 4.68 m and slowly falling, above the moderate flood level (4.00 m) and well above the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway level (2.10 m). Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes: Renewed river level rises and localised flooding is possible downstream of Diamantina Lakes with forecast rainfall. Minor flooding is occurring at Monkira, Roseberth and Birdsville. At 9:00 am Monday the Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station was at 4.25 m and falling, above the minor flood level (4.00 m). The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station is expected to remain around the minor flood level (4.00 m) during the coming week. Renewed rises are likely as upstream flows arrive combined with forecast rainfall. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads. Check the ABC and local media for updates.
