Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Major Flood Warning For The Upper Balonne River Issued at 12:55 PM AEST on Friday 13 March 2026 Flood Warning Number: 7 MAJOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT WARKON AND SURAT Recent heavy rainfall has caused river level rises across the upper Balonne River catchment. The flood peak is around Warkon along the Balonne River where major flooding is occurring. At Surat major flooding is occurring and a major flood peak is possible around Monday. Further downstream at Warroo minor flooding is possible into next week. Elevated river levels and flooding are occurring along Dogwood Creek. No significant rainfall is forecast for the next few days. Dogwood Creek: Moderate flooding is easing along Dogwood Creek at Pine Hill Crossing Balonne River to Surat: Major flooding is occurring along the Balonne River to Surat. The Balonne River at Warkon is currently at 10.72 m and rising, with major flooding. The Balonne River at Warkon may reach around 11.00 m Saturday morning, with major flooding. Further rises are possible and peak forecasts will be provided as upstream flows arrive. No observations are currently available for the Balonne River at Surat. Based on the river level at the nearby automatic station, the river level is estimated to be above the major flood level (9.0 m) and rising. The Balonne River at Surat may exceed 10.00 m during Monday, with major flooding. Peak forecasts will be provided as upstream peaks are observed. Balonne River downstream of Surat to Beardmore Dam: Minor flooding is possible along the Balonne River downstream of Surat to Beardmore Dam. The Balonne River at Warroo is currently at 5.00 m and rising, below the minor flood level. The Balonne River at Warroo may exceed the minor flood level (9.00 m) into next week. Peak forecasts will be provided as upstream peaks are observed. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
