Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Major Flood Warning For The Western River And Minor Flooding Warning For The Diamantina River Issued at 10:28 AM AEST on Wednesday 11 March 2026 Flood Warning Number: 67 MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT WINTON FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON MINOR FLOODING CONTINUING AT BIRDSVILLE Moderate to heavy rainfall was observed across parts of the Western River catchment over the weekend, resulting in river and creek level rises. Moderate flooding is occurring at Winton with major flooding possible from Wednesday afternoon. Further downstream, moderate flooding is falling slowly along the Diamantina River at Diamantina lakes. A flood peak is currently approaching Monkira. As these flows move downstream renewed river rises are possible at Birdsville next week, where minor flooding is occurring. A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula. Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes: The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is currently at 5.13 m and falling, above the moderate flood level (4.00 m) and well above the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway level (2.10 m). Western River: Moderate flooding is occurring along the Western River at Winton. The Western River at Winton is currently at 3.00 m and rising, with moderate flooding. The Western River at Winton may reach around the major flood level (3.50 m) from Wednesday afternoon. Further rises are possible. Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes: Minor flooding is occurring at Roseberth, Monkira and Birdsville. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station was at 5.40 m and falling at 9:00 am Tuesday, with minor flooding. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station is expected to remain above the minor flood level (4.00 m) during the next few days. Renewed rises are possible as upstream flows arrive. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs.
