MINOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT WINTON
MINOR FLOODING LIKELY AT BIRDSVILLE FROM EARLY NEXT WEEK
River levels remain elevated along the Diamantina River, where the main flood peak has now passed Monkira and is now approaching Birdsville. Minor flooding may develop at early next week as this peak moves downstream. River levels are slowly falling but remain above the moderate flood level and above the causeway at Diamantina Lakes.
Upstream, along the Western River, moderate flooding has eased at Winton following a flood peak late last week.
Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes:
The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is at 5.12 m and falling slowly, above the level of the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway (2.10 m).
Western River:
Minor flooding is occurring along the Western River at Winton.
The Western River at Winton is currently at 1.50 m and falling, with minor flooding.
The Western River at Winton is likely to fall below the minor flood level (1.50 m) Wednesday afternoon.
Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes:
River level rises are occurring along the lower Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes. Moderate flooding has eased and minor flooding is occurring at Monkira.
The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station was at 1.75 m around 09:00 am Tuesday 20/01/2026 and steady, below the minor flood level (4.00 m).
The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station is likely to exceed the minor flood level from early next week.
Flood Safety Advice:
Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.
