Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for parts of South East, North West Coast, Central Plateau, Midlands and Central North Forecast Districts.
Issued at 10:42 am Saturday, 22 August 2026.
Damaging winds occurring over parts of the state, easing by late this afternoon.
Weather Situation
A fast moving cold front crossed the state this morning, bringing gusty west to southwesterly conditions for much of Tasmania. Whilst winds are easing in most areas, damaging winds are expected to continue for the Western Tiers and the exposed South East coasts.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
South East, North West Coast, Central North, Central Plateau and Midlands
DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are occurring in parts of the Midlands, Western Tiers and exposed southeast.
Conditions have eased across the southwest, northeast and Furneaux Islands and will ease for the remainder of the warning area by late afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include Oatlands.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Furneaux Islands, Western and North East districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
Cape Bruny recorded a wind gust of 117 km/h at 8:00 am.
Strahan Airport recorded a wind gust of 113 km/h at 2:08 am.
Scotts Peak Dam recorded a wind gust of 98 km/h at 1:47 am.
Cancellation for the following areas:
Furneaux Islands,North East,Western
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Saturday.
