Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST Heatwave Warning Issued at 02:12 PM EDT on Thursday 08 January 2026 Valid for Thursday 08 January 2026 to Sunday 11 January 2026 Warning for the following areas: Metropolitan, Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, South West Slopes and Riverina Warning for the following areas: Hunter, Central Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains, Lower Western and Upper Western Safety Advice: Extreme heatwaves can be dangerous for everyone. Severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell. Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre. Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home. If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool. Maximum temperatures in the high thirties to low forties, reaching the mid forties in the southwest on Thursday and Friday. Overnight minimum temperatures in the high teens to mid twenties, reaching the high twenties in the west Friday morning. The severe to extreme heatwave will gradually ease from the west during the weekend as a southwest to southerly change brings milder temperatures. Locations likely to be impacted include Sydney, Broken Hill, Camden, Dubbo, Gosford, Hornsby, Liverpool, Mona Vale, Orange and Richmond. The next heatwave warning will be issued by 3:00pm EDT on Friday 09 January 2026
