Severe Weather Warning (Damaging Winds) for parts of Metropolitan, Illawarra and Hunter

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds for parts of Metropolitan, Illawarra and Hunter Forecast Districts. Issued at 4:52 pm Saturday, 10 January 2026. A vigorous southerly wind change to produce damaging winds for exposed Sydney and Illawarra coastal locations this evening. Weather Situation A vigorous southerly wind change, currently located near Jervis Bay along the Illawarra coast, will move rapidly northwards along the coast during the evening. DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas: Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra DAMAGING SOUTHERLY WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are likely about the coastal fringe between Jervis Bay and Gosford from early this evening, expected to ease below warning thresholds in the late evening. Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Kiama, Bulli, Port Kembla, Albion Park and Huskisson. Severe weather is no longer occurring in the South Coast, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED. Cancellation for the following areas: South Coast,South West Slopes,Southern Tablelands,Australian Capital Territory,Snowy Mountains The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
