Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Major Flood Warning For The Lower Flinders River And Moderate Flood Warning For The Upper Flinders River Issued at 09:34 AM AEST on Sunday 08 March 2026 Flood Warning Number: 26 MAJOR FLOODING AT WALKERS BEND EXPECTED TO CONTINUE INTO NEXT WEEK MODERATE FLOODING MAY OCCUR AT RICHMOND POST OFFICE FROM MONDAY MORNING WITH FORECAST RAIN Rainfall overnight Saturday and into Sunday is causing renewed river level rises across the upper Flinders River, with minor flooding possible at Richmond from Sunday afternoon. Further rainfall is forecast during Sunday, and this may lead to further river level rises, with moderate flooding possible at Richmond from Monday morning. Downstream, river levels continue rising along the lower Flinders River and its tributaries, with major flooding occurring at Walkers Bend, as floodwaters continue to arrive from the major peak observed at Richmond during February. A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is current for parts of the Flinders and Cloncurry catchments. A Flood Watch is current for most of Queensland. Flinders River to Richmond: Moderate flooding may occur along the upper Flinders River to Richmond from Monday with forecast rain. No current river level observations are available for the Flinders River at Richmond Post Office. The river level is expected to be below the minor flood level and rising. The Flinders River at Richmond Post Office may exceed the minor flood level (5.00 m) Sunday afternoon. The river may reach around the moderate flood level (6.00 m) Monday morning, with forecast rainfall. Flinders River downstream of Richmond: River levels are elevated along the Flinders River downstream of Richmond, with major flooding continuing at Walkers Bend. The Flinders River at Walkers Bend is currently at 9.43 m and steady, with major flooding. The Flinders River at Walkers Bend is expected to remain above the major flood level (8.00 m) into next week. Further rises are possible as upstream flows arrive. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs.
