Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Final Flood Warning For The Haughton River Catchment Issued at 11:53 AM AEST on Friday 02 January 2026 Flood Warning Number: 5 FLOODING NO LONGER OCCURRING AT GIRU River levels at Giru have fallen below the minor flood level following a moderate flood peak Thursday evening. Further rainfall is forecast during the weekend, where renewed rises are possible across the catchment. This situation is being closely monitored, and warnings will be issued as required. A Flood Watch is current for the Haughton River catchment ahead of renewed flood risk from the weekend onwards. Major Creek: Flooding is no longer occurring along Major Creek. Haughton River: Flooding is no longer occurring along the Haughton River. The Haughton River at Giru is currently at 1.73 m and falling, below the minor flood level. The Haughton River at Giru is likely to remain below the minor flood level (1.80 m) overnight Friday into Saturday. Renewed river level rises remain possible from Saturday morning with forecast rain. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads. Check the ABC and local media for updates. The situation can change quickly, so stay informed.
