KATHERINE BRIDGE MAY PEAK NEAR 19.2 M WITH MAJOR FLOODING SATURDAY EVENING, AROUND THE APRIL 2006 FLOOD LEVEL
AT NITMILUK CENTRE RIVER LEVEL IS FALLING AFTER A MAJOR PEAK OCCURRED ABOVE THE APRIL 2006 FLOOD LEVEL
Moderate to heavy rainfall has been observed across the Katherine River catchment since Wednesday, resulting in river level rises along the Katherine River. Major flooding is occurring at Nitmiluk Centre, where the river level has peaked during Saturday morning and is currently falling. Major flooding above the March 2000 flood level (17.50 m) is occurring at Katherine Bridge, with a peak near 19.20 m possible during Saturday evening, which is above the bridge deck and around the 2006 flood level.
Further rainfall is possible for the next few days, which my cause renewed river level rises. The situation is being closely monitored and the warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Bonaparte, North West Coastal and Carpentaria Coastal River catchments.
Katherine River Gorge Road:
Major flooding is occurring at Katherine River Gorge Road.
The Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre peaked at 9.64 m around Saturday morning, with major flooding. The river is currently at 8.08 m and falling, with major flooding.
The Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre may remain above the major flood level (6.50 m) overnight Saturday into Sunday. The river may fall below the major flood level (6.50 m) Sunday morning.
Katherine Town:
Major flooding is occurring at Katherine Town.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge is currently at 19.07 m and rising, with major flooding.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge may peak near 19.20 m Saturday evening, with major flooding. The river may remain above the major flood level (17.50 m) overnight Saturday into Sunday.

Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.
