Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Minor Flood Warning For The Western River And Flood Warning For The Diamantina River Issued at 11:12 AM AEST on Friday 09 January 2026 Flood Warning Number: 19 MINOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT WINTON Recent heavy rainfall has caused river level rises and flooding across the Diamantina River catchment and its upper tributaries. Minor flooding is occurring along the Western River at Winton. Moderate flooding is occurring at Diamantina Lakes. An earlier flood peak is continuing to move downstream along the Diamantina River below Monkira. Further rainfall may redevelop over the next week, with a low forecast to move over northern Queensland. This may result in renewed river level rises and flooding. This situation is being closely monitored, and warnings will be updated as required Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes: The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is at 4.05 m and rising, above the level of the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway (2.10 m). Western River: Minor flooding is occurring along the Western River at Winton. The Western River at Winton was at 1.85 m and steady at 10:50 am on Wednesday, 7th January, with minor flooding. The Western River at Winton may remain above the minor flood level (1.50 m) for the remainder of Friday into Saturday. Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes: River level rises are occurring along the lower Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes, with a flood peak travelling downstream of Monkira. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads. Check the ABC and local media for updates. The situation can change quickly, so stay informed.
