Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Major Flood Warning For The Pioneer River Issued at 08:34 PM AEST on Sunday 11 January 2026 Flood Warning Number: 6 MAJOR FLOODING EASING AT MIRANI BELOW MODERATE PEAK POSSIBLE AT MACKAY SUNDAY NIGHT Heavy to intense rainfall has been observed across parts of the Pioneer River catchment since Saturday morning. This rainfall has resulted in rapid river and creek level rises. Further heavy to intense rainfall is forecast for the remainder of Sunday and into Monday as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji continues to track southwest and inland. Major flooding is easing at Mirani. Minor flooding is likely at Mackay Sunday evening, with the river level possibly peaking below the moderate flood level Sunday night. Renewed minor flooding at Mackay is possible on the high tide Monday morning. This situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required. A Severe Weather Warning for heavy, locally intense rainfall is current for the Pioneer River catchment. Pioneer River: Major flooding is easing along the Pioneer River at Mirani. Near moderate flooding is possible at Mackay. Rapid river level rises are occurring across the catchment. No observations are currently available for the Pioneer River at Mirani, however, based on the nearby automatic gauge the river level is expected to be above the major flood level (9.00 m) and falling. The Pioneer River at Mirani is likely to fall below the major flood level (9.00 m) Sunday evening. The Pioneer River at Mackay is currently at 6.15 m (3.21 m AHD) and rising, below the minor flood level. The Pioneer River at Mackay is likely to exceed the minor flood level (6.30 m) Sunday evening. The river level may peak below the moderate flood level (6.90 m) Sunday night. Renewed river level rises to the minor flood level (6.30 m) are possible with the high tide during Monday morning.
