  • Looks like winter is back in Victoria

    Maryam Al-Ansari, 14 September 2024

A wintry cold front crossed Australia's southeast today and the anticipated cold snap was felt all across the state of Victoria, with cities across the state seeing maximum temperatures 3 to 10 degrees below their September average.

Not to mention that today was the coldest September day for:

    • Bairnsdale: only reaching 10.0 degrees at 6:00am, making it the coldest September day since 1983
    • Melbourne Airport: reaching 10.3 degrees at 11:30am, making it the coldest September day since 1995
    • Mount Moornapa: reaching 6.7 degrees at 7:38am, making it the coldest September day since 1995 and 9.7 degrees below the monthly average
    • Mount Nowa Nowa: reaching 7.6 degrees at 8:26am, making it the coldest September day since 1996 and 9.5 degrees below the monthly average
    • Latrobe Valley: reaching 10.1 degrees, the coldest September day since 1998
    • Melbourne (recordings are taken at Olympic Park): reaching 10.8 degrees, the coldest September day since 2004
    • More centres which saw the coldest September day since 2004 are: Essendon, Laverton, Rhyll, Scoresby, Viewbank, the Kilmore Gap and Sale

We also had some record low maximum temperatures:

    • The 10.0 degrees recorded at Orbost is the coldest maximum record since early August of 2020 (and coldest September day on record)
    • Cape Otway's maximum of 10.3 degrees today makes it the coldest day since July 2021 (and coldest September day since 2005)

However, the combination of these chilling temperatures with the gust winds from the Strait, thick clouds, showers and even hail, temperatures felt a lot colder than actual. Many sites to the west and north of Port Philip recorded feels-like temperatures below freezing, as far west as Cape Nelson. Some central sites include:

    • Melbourne Airport: recorded a minimum feels-like temperature of –0.4 degrees at 2:00pm
    • Essendon Airport: recorded a minimum feels-like temperature of –1.0 degrees at 3:51pm
    • Laverton recorded: a minimum feels-like temperature of –0.7 degrees at 11:27am
    • Avalon Airport: recorded a minimum feels-like temperature of –3.2 degrees at 1:16pm
    • Geelong: recorded a minimum feels-like temperature of –2.3 degrees at 1:00pm
    • Ballarat: recorded a minimum feels-like temperature of –4.5 degrees at 5:50pm
    • Kilmore Gap: recorded a minimum feels-like temperature of –7.2 degrees at 2:35pm
    • Airey Inlet: recorded a minimum feels-like temperature of –1.4 degrees at 10:00am

Temperatures in Victoria still look to be winter-like on Sunday but with showers clearing in the afternoon temperatures should peak 1-3 degrees warmer than they did today.
