Initial Moderate Flood Warning For The Cann And Genoa Rivers

MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE IN THE CANN AND GENOA CATCHMENTS OVERNIGHT TUESDAY
River rises are occurring in the Bemm, Cann and Genoa catchments in response to observed rainfall. Further heavy rainfall is forecast for overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Minor flooding is likely to develop in the Cann and Genoa catchments from Tuesday afternoon and moderate flooding may develop overnight.
The situation is being closely monitored, and warnings will be updated as necessary.
Bemm River:
River levels are rising along the Bemm River and further strong rises are possible overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
Cann River:
Moderate flooding may occur along the Cann River.
The Cann River (West) at Weeragua is currently at 2.54 metres and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Cann River (West) at Weeragua is likely to exceed the minor flood level (3.00 m) Tuesday evening. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (3.50 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
The Cann River (East) at Chandlers Creek is currently at 1.98 metres and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Cann River (East) at Chandlers Creek is likely to exceed the minor flood level (2.00 m) Tuesday afternoon. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (2.30 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
Genoa River:
Moderate flooding may occur along the Genoa River.
The Genoa River at The Gorge is currently at 1.76 metres and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Genoa River at The Gorge is likely to exceed the minor flood level (1.90 m) Tuesday evening. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (2.20 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
Flood Safety Advice:
SES advises that all community members should:
Never walk, ride or drive through floodwater,
Never allow children to play in floodwater,
Stay away from waterways and stormwater drains during and after heavy rain,
Keep well clear of fallen power lines
Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks, and heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.}
