Initial Moderate Flood Warning For The Johnstone River Catchment

MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT MCAVOY BRIDGE AND INNISFAIL WHARF FROM OVERNIGHT FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY
MINOR FLOODING LIKELY AT MOURILYAN MILL FRIDAY EVENING
Moderate rainfall totals recorded this week have resulted in river level rises in the Johnstone River catchment.
Significant rainfall is forecast for the remainder of Friday and into the weekend. Further rises are expected with forecast rainfall across the next few days. The situation is being closely monitored and warnings will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch for coastal and adjacent inland catchments south of Cairns to Mackay. A Severe Weather Warning is current for parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.
North Johnstone:
Moderate flooding may occur along the North Johnstone River.
The North Johnstone River at McAvoy Bridge is currently at 1.65 metres and falling, below the minor flood level.
The North Johnstone River at McAvoy Bridge is likely to exceed the minor flood level (5.00 m) Friday evening. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (6.00 m) overnight Friday into Saturday. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
South Johnstone:
Minor flooding is likely along the South Johnstone River.
No river level observations are available for Mourilyan Mill, however, the river level is expected to be below the minor flood level and steady.
The South Johnstone River at Mourilyan Mill is likely to exceed the minor flood level (8.00 m) Friday evening. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
Johnstone River:
Moderate flooding may occur along the Johnstone River.
No river level observations are available for Innisfail Wharf, however, the river level is expected to be below the minor flood level and steady.
The Johnstone River at Innisfail Wharf is likely to exceed the minor flood level (5.00 m) Friday evening. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (5.50 m) overnight Friday into Saturday. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

Flooding in North Queensland catchments during December 2023 damaged high priority river gauges that support the Bureau of Meteorology to provide high accuracy flood forecasts. While river gauges are being repaired, the Bureau will continue to issue flood watches and warnings for these catchments using the best available data
