Initial Moderate Flood Warning For The Haughton River Catchment

MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT GIRU SATURDAY MORNING
Moderate to heavy rainfall totals have been observed across the Haughton River catchment since Monday. Heavy rainfall is forecast across the catchment for the remainder of Friday and into the weekend.
Minor flooding is likely at Giru from overnight Friday and moderate flooding is possible from Saturday morning with forecast rainfall.
The situation is being closely monitored and warnings will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for coastal and adjacent inland catchments south of Cairns to Mackay. A Severe Weather Warning is current for parts of the North Tropical Coast, Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.
Haughton River:
Moderate flooding may occur along the Haughton River.
The Haughton River at Giru is currently at 0.58 metres and steady, below the minor flood level (1.80 m).
The Haughton River at Giru is likely to exceed the minor flood level (1.80 m) overnight Friday into Saturday. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (2.10 m) Saturday morning. Further river level rises are possible with forecast rainfall during the next few days.
